[1. Call to Order]
[00:00:11]
ALL RIGHT, LET'S GET THIS PARTY STARTED, THEN. I'D LIKE TO CALL TO ORDER THIS REGULAR CITY PARKLAND COMMUNITY ADVISORY BOARD MEETING THIS 12TH DAY OF MARCH 2024. I SEE JACKIE IS HERE TO LEAD US IN THE PLEDGE.
>> I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, AND TO THE REPUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS, ONE NATION, UNDER GOD, INDIVISIBLE, WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR
>> BILL KENNEDY? JEFF WOLFE? SHERRY KIMBALL? ANGELICA? RUPERT? KENDRA IS OUT, DENISE?
[4. Approval of Minutes]
>> NEXT ON THE AGENDA, APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES FROM A GENERALLY NINTH 2024 MEETINGS, HAS EVERYONE HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO REVIEW THE MINUTES? GOOD, CAN I GET A MOTION TO APPROVE? AND A SECOND? OKAY, FROM LORI AND JEFF, A SECOND FROM JEFF? NEXT ON THE AGENDA, COMMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC. ALL RIGHT,
[6. Comments by the Chair and Board]
EVERYBODY, SIMMER DOWN. ALL RIGHT. SEEING THAT WE HAVE NO PUBLIC WE WILL MOVE ON. NOW WE HAVE COMMENTS FROM THE CHAIR AND FROM THE BOARD. FIRST OF ALL I WANT TO THANK EVERYONE FOR ALL YOUR HARD WORK ON THE FLOAT. AS YOU KNOW, OR YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW, WE WON BEST OVERALL FLOAT OF THE YEAR.THERE WE GO. RUPERT, HE'S NOT HERE, BUT I FIGURED HE'D GIVE THE ACCEPTANCE SPEECH, AT THE AWARDS BANQUET WHEN THEY HAVE THE RED CARPET AND EVERYTHING OUT FOR US. BUT, WOULD ALSO LIKE TO THANK JEFF AND JUDY SCHWARTZ, ONCE AGAIN, FOR ALLOWING US THE OPPORTUNITY TO BUILD THIS FLOAT AT THEIR HOUSE. WHAT WAS AMAZING WAS THE FACT THAT HE WAS GOING THROUGH SOME PROBLEMS WITH SOME FAMILY MEMBERS IN THE HOSPITAL AND STUFF, AND HE WAS OUT RUSHING TO THE HOSPITAL HIM AND JUDY EVERY DAY, BUT YET THEY STILL WANTED TO BE OUT THERE AND SEE WHAT THEY COULD TRY TO DO TO HELP US, BUT I JUST WANT TO THANK THEM AGAIN. IF IT WASN'T FOR THEM WE COULDN'T HAVE PUT THIS FLOAT TOGETHER. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO THANK THE GENTLEMAN THAT HELPED US DRIVE THE FLOAT TO THE HOLDING AREA, AND ALSO HE DID A GREAT JOB DURING THE PARADE, AND ALSO HE STOOD BY AT THE END SO WE COULD TAKE THE FLOAT APART, AND ENDED UP BRINGING IT BACK. I WANT TO THANK HIM AS WELL, I DON'T KNOW HIS NAME, OKAY. GREAT, IF YOU COULD REACH OUT TO HIM, THANK HIM FOR US. AND ALSO I WANT TO THANK THE TWO OF YOU, AND ALSO NATALIE FOR ALL THE HARD WORK THAT YOU PUT INTO THIS. I KNOW IT'S BEEN A LONG WEEK FOR YOU GUYS, LEADING UP TO THAT HER RATE PARADE, BUT I THINK EVERYTHING WENT GREAT. BUT WITH THAT SAID, I WILL GO AHEAD AND PASS IT DOWN TO DENISE. IF YOU
HAVE ANY COMMENTS? >> OF COURSE I DO. IT WAS AWESOME WORKING WITH EVERYBODY ON THIS AND COLLABORATING, AND DIVISION CAME TOGETHER, IT WAS AWESOME. THIS CITY WAS AMAZING, THE SMILES FROM EVERYBODY IN THE CITY, YOU COULD FEEL IT, YOU LOVE IT AS MUCH AS WE DID. I'M GLAD THAT WE GOT TO SEE THE BAND, THAT WAS INCREDIBLE. MY HIGHLIGHT OF THE DAY. AND I WANT TO THANK EVERYBODY. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
>> SHARRY? >> A LOT GOING ON IN PARKLAND SINCE WE LAST MET. I WANT TO RECOGNIZE THE BEAUTIFUL ANGELICA, AND ALL OF THE CAST OF MEAN GIRLS, ONE OF HAS TO BE THE GREATEST PRODUCTIONS EVER AND THE ONLY ONE I'VE EVER
SEEN, SO I THOUGHT IT WAS >> ANGELINA. IT WAS CLOSE. I WAS WONDERING IF ANGELIKA WAS THERE. SHE'S GOING TO HAVE TO PERFORM AT THE AWARDS. MY DAUGHTER CAN NOW GO, THANK YOU.
THERE YOU GO. THANK YOU. >> THERE WAS ALSO A COMMUNITY TENNIS FUNDRAISER THAT WAS QUITE A SUCCESS. THERE WERE FUNDS RAISED FOR A VERY WORTHY CHARITY IN COLUMBIA. A FOSTER HOME FOR GIRLS, YOUNG GIRLS. AND THE RUN FOR BEAGLE EVENT WAS QUITE A SUCCESS, AND THE FARMERS MARKET CAR SHOW WAS THE SAME DAY, ALSO A SUCCESS. THERE ARE STILL A FEW SEATS LEFT FOR THE MAKE OUR SCHOOLS SAFE GALA AND ALSO SOME SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES. AND IN JACOB'S SHOES IS HAVING A SHOPPING FUNDRAISER ON APRIL 11TH FROM 5:00 TO 8:30 P.M..
[00:05:06]
AND TOMORROW IS THE PARKLAND CHAMBER OF COMMERCE EMPOWERING WOMEN LUNCHEON. SO MUCH GOING ON ALWAYS IN PARKLAND, KUDOS TO BILL, JEFF, AND DENISE ON LITERALLY DOING THE CONSTRUCTION PIECE ON THAT FLOAT, THAT WAS AMAZING TO WITNESS. AND EVERYONE ELSE, ANGELA ALSO DISSIPATED. THREE GREAT EVENTS THE CITY PUT ON, THE VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION LUNCH WAS AMAZING, THE PARADE OF COURSE, AND THE NIGHTTIME CONCERTS, SO THANK YOU, TO THE CITY, AND TO THE COMMUNITY FOR COMING OUT, AND MAKING IT A LOT OF FUN FOR EVERYONE, ESPECIALLY THE KIDS. AND I ALSO WANT TO SAY THAT LITTLE APPRECIATION CERTIFICATE REALLY MEANS A LOT. WE WORK HARD, AND IT'S JUST A PIECE OF PAPER, BUT IT WAS TRULY APPRECIATED. THE GINA EGG MY LAWN ON MARCH 30TH, YOU CAN STILL SIGN UP IF YOU HAVE EGGS ON YOUR LAWN. THERE IS A BAKE AT THE PARKLAND ON MARCH 18TH, YOU CAN STILL SIGN UP FOR THAT. AND THERE'S BEEN, I'M SURE WE'VE ALL NOTICED A LOT OF MARKETING BY THE CANDIDATES RUNNING FOR THE TWO SOON TO BE OPEN SEATS, WE WISH THEM ALL THE BEST OF LUCK. AND THE LIBRARY BOOK FAIRS ARE COMING, THERE'S ONE ON THE 13TH OF APRIL, MAY 11TH, AND JUNE 8, AND OF COURSE, I'M SURE SOON WE'RE GOING TO HEAR ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP. ALL GOOD THINGS, LOTS GOING ON.>> FANTASTIC, JEFF? >> I DON'T HAVE MUCH TO ADD ABOUT PARKLAND EXCEPT THINGS HAVE CALMED DOWN AS FAR AS THE BICYCLE GANG STUFF, IT LOOKS LIKE THEY'RE GETTING THAT UNDER CONTROL, I WANT TO CONGRATULATE BILL FOR BEING ABLE TO COORDINATE AND COVER EVER COLLABORATE ALL THE DIFFERENT OPINIONS ON PUTTING TOGETHER THE FLOAT, THAT WAS AHEAD SCRATCHER. BUT IT CAME TOGETHER WELL. NEXT YEAR WE'RE GOING AUTOMATION, I HEARD. FULL AUTOMATION. SO THAT WILL BE GREAT. GOOD JOB, I REALLY ENJOYED WORKING WITH EVERYBODY, AND THE CITY, I THOUGHT IT WAS A GOOD SPIRIT. AND IT CAME TOGETHER NICELY. THANK YOU FOR TAKING APART THE FLOAT. THAT
WAS NICE OF YOU. >> MY PLEASURE, ARE YOU
KIDDING? ANGELIKA? >> THANK YOU, EVERYBODY, I'M SO SAD THAT I MISSED IT AGAIN, BUT IT SEEMS INCREDIBLE. I KNOW BEING A PARENT WE HAD TO DO A LANGUAGE, AND I KNOW HOW MUCH WORK GETS PUT INTO THAT FROM ALL MEMBERS BUT ESPECIALLY EVERYONE HERE ON OUR FLOAT, SO THANK YOU FOR ALL THAT EFFORT.
WE WOULD LOVE TO PLUG IT, MAYB THERE IS AN OPPORTUNITY IN THE FUTURE, IF THERE IS, FOR THE EVENT AND THE VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION TO BE ON A SUNDAY OR MAYBE ANOTHER DAY. AND I KNOW THAT THAT WOULD ENABLE A LOT OF ADDITIONAL PEOPLE WHO ALSO VOLUNTEER IN OUR COMMUNITY TREMENDOUSLY TO JOIN. ON THAT NOTE OF PEOPLE WHO WOULD POSSIBLY BE ABLE TO ATTEND ON SUNDAY, I DID WANT TO PLUG THAT PARKLAND HAS AN INCREDIBLE FRIENDSHIP CIRCLE PROGRAM FOR YOUTH WHO HAVE DISABILITIES, THEY ARE ABLE TO LINK THEM UP WITH BUDDIES AND MENTORS, THEY DO ALL SORTS OF SOCIAL EVENTS TOGETHER, AND THERE'S A LOT OF VOLUNTEERS IN OUR COMMUNITY, BOTH SABBATH OBSERVANT AND NOT SABBATH OBSERVANT TO DISSIPATE IN THAT, THEY STARTED A FRIENDSHIP CIRCLE BAKERY PROGRAM WHICH IS REALLY NICE.
MOST WEEKS YOU'RE ABLE TO ACTUALLY GO ONLINE AND ORDER, AND YOU CAN ORDER CHALLAH BREAD AND DESSERTS, AND NOW THEY'RE BAKING BUT WHATEVER RELIGION YOU ARE, IT DOESN'T REALLY MATTER, THEY'RE OPEN TO EVERYBODY IN THE COMMUNITIES, THEY HAVE PEOPLE OF ALL AGES, STATES, CHILDREN TO YOUTH, ADULT AGE PARTICIPATING IN THEIR VARIOUS PROGRAMS, INCLUDING THE BAKERY AND A SPECIAL CHEF WHO'S ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL, WHO IS JUST A WONDERFUL EDUCATOR, IS REALLY TEACHING THEM THOSE HANDS ON SKILLS. I WAS TRYING TO FIND THE LINK, AND I COULDN'T AT THE MOMENT. BUT MAYBE STEPHANIE, IF I CAN GIVE YOU THE LINK TO PUT IN THE MINUTES LATER I DON'T KNOW IF I CAN DO THAT, BUT IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO MEMORIALIZE HOW PEOPLE MIGHT BE ABLE TO ORDER DESSERTS IF THEY WANT AT THE END OF THE WEEK.
>> I HAVE A FLYER, I CAN EMAIL IT TO YOU.
>> PERFECT, OKAY. I HAVE A VERY LONG LINK THAT'S AN ORDER FORM AND IT WOULDN'T BE SOMETHING THAT I COULD RATTLE OFF AND REMEMBER MEMORIZE. THANK YOU SO MUCH. THAT'S IT, THANK YOU EVERYONE TO MY COLLEAGUES AND THE CITY STAFF I KNOW IT WAS AN
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING EVENT. >> THANKS, ANGELIKA, LORI?
>> GOOD EVENING. THAT WAS A PERFECT SEGUE, MY FIRST ITEM THAT I WANTED TO SAY WAS, I'D LIKE TO ACKNOWLEDGE OUR NEIGHBORS WHO ARE OBSERVING THE SOLEMN HOLIDAY OF RAMADAN. AND I KNOW THAT OUR CITY HAS INCLUSIVITY ON ITS BRAIN, AND
[00:10:08]
WE DO OUR BEST. IT WAS A GOOD SEGUE INTO THAT. ALSO, COMMEND MY COLLEAGUES FOR ANOTHER WONDERFUL YEAR THAT YOU HAD, WHEN I DID SEE THE FACEBOOK VIDEOS AND PICTURES AND EVERYBODY LOOKED, SOCCER, WASN'T THAT, WHO WAS DRESSED AS SOCCER? RUPERT, RUPERT. THAT WAS ADORABLE. REALLY, EVERYBODY LOOKS GREAT. WHICH IS TERRIFIC. THE ONLY SPORT THAT I PROBABLY COULD HAVE DRESSED AT WAS SHOPPING, THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN A GOOD SPORT. BUT, ASIDE FROM THAT, IT DOES MY HEART GOOD TO SEE ALL THE ACTIVITY OUTSIDE, YES, WE'RE IN THE EARLY VOTING, AND WE MAY NOT FEEL IT OTHER THAN SEEING ALL THIS ACTIVITY OUTSIDE, BECAUSE COUNTYWIDE, THERE ARE ONLY THREE MUNICIPALITIES THAT HAVE CITY ELECTIONS. HILLSBORO BEACH, LAUDERDALE BY THE SEA AND PEMBROKE PINES. AND I WANT TO JUST TELL EVERYONE THAT OUR CITY HAD THE GOOD INSTINCT TO MOVE OUR MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS TO ELECTION DAY, IN NOVEMBER, SO THAT THE CITY SAVES MONEY ON RUNNING THAT TYPE OF ELECTION.HOWEVER, IT'S ALSO PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY TIME, AND I'M WATCHING THE COUNTYWIDE VOTER TURNOUT, BECAUSE THERE'S ONLY THREE CITIES BUT THERE IS PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY, AS OF TODAY, THE TURNOUT IN THE COUNTY WAS 1.9%. SO I'M HOPING THAT INCREASES, BECAUSE PEOPLE SHOULD VOTE. REGARDLESS OF WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, HOW, THEY SHOULD EXERCISE THEIR RIGHT. SO OF COURSE, IT'S TOO LATE TO GET A VOTE BY MAIL BALLOT FOR THIS ELECTION AND, EARLY VOTING WILL CONTINUE UNTIL NEXT TUESDAY, AND ENDS SUNDAY, IT'S NOT ON MONDAY. BUT IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A VOTE BY MAIL APPLICATION FOR THE NOVEMBER AND AUGUST PRIMARIES, FOR ALL OF OUR STATE OFFICES, AND THOSE WILL BE THE CITY OFFICES IF THEY HAVE CONTESTED ELECTIONS.
YOU CAN DO THAT BY GOING TO BROWARD VOTES.ORG. YOU CAN DO IT ONLINE OR CALL THE SUPERVISOR OF ELECTIONS OF BROWARD. SO, GOOD TO BE BACK, GLAD TO SEE EVERYBODY. THANK YOU FOR KEEPING THE SHIP GOING WHICH I KNEW YOU WOULD. THANK
>> GOOD AFTERNOON, EVERYBODY. BIG SHOUT OUT TO BILL.
>> WE ALL HAD OUR PART. >> IT'S DIFFICULT TO ORCHESTRATE THE WHOLE THING. IT'S NOT EASY. KUDOS FOR THAT.
IT WAS GREAT TO PARTICIPATE. I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH HOW GREAT THE CITY IS IN TERMS OF THE ACTIVITIES, AND THE RESIDENCE.
TOMORROW IS THE MEETING FOR THE FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY, WE HAVE A PRESIDENT HERE, AND ALL I CAN SAY IS, KEEP SPREADING THE WORD ABOUT ACTIVITIES, SPORTS CULTURAL ACTIVITIES OF THE CITY. SOMETHING IS GOING TO COME, EVERYTHING WE DO IS GREAT, AND SOMETHING IS GOING TO COME WITH A BETTER IDEA TO SPREAD THE WORD IN ORDER TO HAVE MORE PEOPLE COMING TO THE PARADE, MORE PEOPLE COMING TO ACTIVITIES. AND I BELIEVE, AS WE REPRESENT THE COMMUNITY, WE ALSO NEED TO BRING THEM OVER TO THE ACTIVITIES THE CITY IS ORGANIZING FOR ALL OF US
NEIGHBORS. THANK YOU. >> BY THE WAY, I WANT TO THANK MARIANO'S DAUGHTERS, THEY HELPED. WE HAD KENDRA'S DAUGHTER THAT CAME AND HELPED OUT, RUPERT'S DAUGHTER CAME OUT AND HELP, WE HAD A LOT OF HELPERS THIS YEAR, IT WAS REALLY NICE. THANK YOU. AND THEY WERE ALSO PART OF THE PARADE, THEY WERE THE GYMNASTS THAT WERE RUNNING AROUND. IN THE PARADE. SO IT WAS A NICE EFFORT FROM EVERYONE. OKAY.
[7. Approval of the Agenda]
WITH THAT SAID, WE HAVE THE APPROVAL OF THE AGENDA, CAN I[8. New Business]
GET A MOTION TO APPROVE THE AGENDA? OKAY, ANGELIKA, SECOND FROM LORI. NEXT, WE GO ON TO NEW BUSINESS, REGARDING THE COMMUNITY ADVISORY BOARD AND OTHER SCHOLARSHIPS. JACKIE,IT'S ALL YOURS. >> ALL RIGHT, GOOD EVENING,
[00:15:06]
JACKIE WAYMIRE SENIOR DIRECTOR OF SEDENTARY AND INTERGOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS. BEFORE I BEGIN, I WANTED TO SAY THANK YOU TO YOU ALL FOR BEING SUCH EXEMPLARY EXAMPLES OF OUR COMMUNITY. COMING TOGETHER, BUILDING THAT FLOAT, HAVING FUN, AND SHOWING EVERYBODY THE CITY SPIRIT. AGAIN THIS YEAR YOU ARE THE ONLY BORDER COMMITTEE THAT HAD A FLOAT IN THE PARADE. SO THANK YOU FOR THAT. AS AN EMPLOYEE AND AS A RESIDENCE, I COULDN'T SEE A BETTER EXAMPLE OUT THERE. THANKYOU ALL VERY MUCH FOR THAT. >> CAN YOU DO ME A FAVOR AND LET THE OTHER BOARDS KNOW THAT WE HAVE A TROPHY AND THEY
DON'T? >> YES, I WILL. IF YOU'D LIKE TO BE THE PUBLIC AT ONE OF THE MEETINGS AND JUST HOLD IT UP.
>> THIS HAS TO GO UP IN THE CITY, DOES IT NOT?
>> ALL RIGHT. TONIGHT WE'VE GOT ONE ITEM BUT IT'S ONE BIG ITEM. THAT'S OUR SCHOLARSHIPS. AS YOU KNOW, THE CAB SCHOLARSHIPS, IN THE ABSENCE OF THE ALLSTATE SCHOLARSHIPS THIS YEAR, WE HAD SOME FAMILIES AND SOME BUSINESSES STEP UP TO THE PLATE AND PROVIDE ADDITIONAL FUNDING, AND THANK YOU TO DENISE FOR GETTING THE WORD OUT, IF IT WASN'T FOR YOU TALKING TO PEOPLE AND GETTING THE WORD OUT, WE WOULDN'T HAVE THESE. BUT WE'VE GOT A TOTAL OF 10 SCHOLARSHIPS TO GIVE THIS YEAR, WHICH IS WONDERFUL. SO, YOU KNOW I'LL BE SPEAKING AT ONE OF THE UPCOMING CHAMBER EVENTS TO TALK TO THE GROUP ABOUT ANY OTHER BUSINESSES THAT PERHAPS NEXT YEAR WANT TO CONTRIBUTE. YOU MIGHT HAVE EVEN MORE NEXT YEAR. BUT, THOSE ADDITIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS, WE'VE GOT THREE OF THEM FROM THE KENNEDY TEAM, THANKS TO BILL. TWO FROM THE MESA TAYLOR FAMILY, ONE FROM THE EATON FAMILY, ONE FROM THE PARKLAND CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. SO, IT'S A GOOD PROBLEM TO HAVE, WE HAVE 10 SCHOLARSHIPS, AND BECAUSE OF ALL THOSE SCHOLARSHIPS WE GOT A TOTAL OF 73 INDIVIDUAL APPLICATIONS. HOWEVER, THAT'S REPRESENTATIVE OF 32 STUDENTS, AND BECAUSE SOME OF THE QUALIFICATIONS WERE DIFFERENT FOR THESE SCHOLARSHIPS, THAT'S WHY WE'VE GOT A DIFFERING NUMBER. BUT, OUT OF THAT, WE'VE GOT EIGHT OF THE LOCAL HIGH SCHOOLS REPRESENTED. THEY'RE ALL PARKLAND STUDENTS, BUT GOING TO A DIFFERENT HIGH SCHOOLS, SO THE GREAT THING WAS, THE WORD GOT OUT THERE, MARCELLA HAS A WONDERFUL LIST OF CONTACTS, AND SHE'S ALSO PART ASSISTANT. IF WE DON'T FEEL THAT WE'VE GOTTEN THE WORD OUT THERE SUFFICIENTLY, MARCELLA ENSURES THAT IT HAS BEEN. SO, 32 APPLICANTS MEANS THAT YOU'VE GOT A LOT OF WORK TO DO. WE HAVE ON HERE THE LIST OF OUR REVIEWERS, AND THE LIST OF OUR INTERVIEWERS. AND IT'S UP TO YOU HOW YOU'D LIKE TO MANAGE THIS PROCESS, BUT I'VE GOT A RECOMMENDATION TO MAKE AS TO WHAT YOU MIGHT WANT TO DO. REVIEWING, I'D SAY LET'S GIVE YOU A LITTLE EXTRA TIME. WE DON'T WANT TO NEED A SUPER QUICK TURNAROUND AND THEN HAVE YOU ALL FEEL THAT YOU'RE BURDENED WITH A LOT OF REVIEW. BUT PERHAPS, IF WE SAID WE'VE GOT THREE WEEKS FOR THE APPLICATION REVIEW, AND YOU DO 10 A WEEK COME OF THAT MIGHT BE MORE MANAGEABLE. AND THEN MAYBE, WHAT WE CAN DO IS, INSTEAD OF INTERVIEWING 32 STUDENTS, WHICH WILL TAKE A VERY LONG TIME, PERHAPS WE CAN CALL THAT DOWN TO THE TOP 20 SCORING APPLICANTS, SINCE WE HAVE 10 SCHOLARSHIPS TO GIVE, THAT'S DOUBLE THE NUMBER. AND 20 MIGHT BE DOABLE FOR INTERVIEWS, IF WE DO TWO DAYS WORTH. SO WE'VE GIVEN THEM 15 MINUTES BEFORE, ALTHOUGH WE'VE NOTICED IN THE PAST THAT WE PROBABLY ONLY NEED 10 MINUTES EACH. SO IF WE DID SOME THING LIKE THAT AND WE COULD DO FIVE IN AN HOUR, MAYBE WE CAN DO 10 ONE AFTERNOON AND 10 ANOTHER AFTERNOON. WE CAN WORK ALL OF THAT OUT, AND WE CAN FIGURE THINGS OUT BY SCHEDULE. I TOOK A LOOK AT THE CALENDAR, AND WE CAN GET YOU THE REVIEW GROUP, WE CAN GET YOU EVERYTHING TOMORROW. BECAUSE MARCELLA'S GOT EVERYTHING ORGANIZED. IF WE DO THAT, AND WE SAY YOU'VE GOT THREE WEEKS TO DO THAT, THAT WOULD BE APRIL 3RD. AND THEN IF WE CAN GET INTERVIEWS SCHEDULED, PERHAPS THE LAST WEEK IN APRIL, FIRST WEEK IN MAY, THAT'S GOING TO GIVE ENOUGH TIME FOR US TO TALLY EVERYTHING TOGETHER, AND HAVE IT FOR YOU, FOR YOUR NEXT MEETING WHICH IS MAY 14TH. AND THEN THE NEXT COMMISSION MEETING AFTER THAT THAT IT WOULD BE POSSIBLE TO PUT IT ON WOULD BE JUNE 5TH. THAT'S STILL BEFORE SCHOOL ENDS. I THINK,
[00:20:01]
TIMING WISE, THAT MIGHT WORK OUT. AGAIN, JUST A SUGGESTION,BUT I THINK WE CAN DO THIS. >> CAN YOU REVIEW THE NAMES OF WHERE WE'RE SIGNED UP FOR, WHETHER IT'S INTERVIEWING AT ALL? AND I'M NOT SURE OF, IF I'M DOING THE SCORING THAT I'M NOT INVOLVED IN THE INTERVIEWING, BUT SINCE YOU'RE LOOKING AT DOING TWO DAYS FOR THE INTERVIEWS, MAYBE HAVE AN ALTERNATE LIST, IF YOU NEED TO CALL SOMEONE BECAUSE SCHEDULES MAY CHANGE. SOME OF THE INTERVIEWERS MAY NOT BE ABLE TO
BE HERE TWO DAYS IN A ROW. >> THAT'S TRUE. AGAIN, THIS IS ALL, IT'S NOT MANDATORY THAT YOUR PART OF THE PROCESS, AND WE HAVE HAD TIMES THAT PEOPLE HAVE NEEDED TO STEP OUT OF THE PROCESS, BUT, RIGHT NOW ON THE REVIEW LIST, WE HAVE ANGELIKA, KENDRA, DENISE, AND JEFF. AND INTERVIEWING WOULD BE SHARRY, LORI, RUPERT, BILL, AND MARI ANNA. AND THAT IS JUST A FLIP-FLOP OF LAST YEAR'S SCHOLARSHIP GROUP. I KNOW IT SOUNDS CONFUSING BECAUSE YOU MAY HAVE THOUGHT I JUST RECENTLY REVIEWED OR INTERVIEWED, BUT THAT WOULD BE FOR THE YOUTH AMBASSADORS, AND THAT GROUP WE'VE SWITCHED
AROUND EVERY YEAR AS WELL. >> I, FOR ONE, LOVE YOUR SUGGESTIONS. I THINK IT'S THE WAY TO GO. THREE WEEKS TO DO 10, WITH THIS GROUP, YOU CAN DO ALL 30 AND ONE NIGHT. I KNOW WHAT THEY'RE CAPABLE OF. I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE SAYING GIVING THEM THREE WEEKS, THAT'S A LOT OF TIME TO DO 30 APPLICATIONS.
BREAKING IT DOWN TO THE TOP 20 IS A GREAT IDEA. DOING 30 INTERVIEWS WOULD BE CRAZY. WE MIGHT AS WELL JUST USE THE TOP 20 SCORES FROM THE INTERVIEW PROCESS.
>> SURE. I THINK THE THING THAT MAKES IT EASIER IS EVEN THOUGH THERE ARE DIFFERENT CRITERIA FOR THE DIFFERENT SCHOLARSHIPS, THE RATING IS STILL THE SAME. YOU'RE STILL LOOKING AT THE OVERALL APPLICATION, YOU'RE LOOKING AT THE QUALITY OF THE ESSAY AND NOT NECESSARILY RATING IT ON OTHER THINGS, IS IT CLEAR, ARE THEY TALKING ABOUT WHAT WE'VE ASKED THEM TO TALK ABOUT, THAT KIND OF THING. SINCE WE'RE LOOKING AT THE SAME CRITERIA WE'LL HAVE DIFFERENT LISTS FOR THE PEOPLE WHO ARE ELIGIBLE FOR CAB VERSUS THE PEOPLE WHO ARE ELIGIBLE FOR THE OTHER ONES. IT WILL JUST BE AN OVERALL SCORE THAT RANKS
PEOPLE. >> OKAY, GREAT. ANY THOUGHTS?
>> I HAD A CLARIFYING QUESTION, I'M SORRY IF I MISSED THIS.
THERE IS 32 APPLICANTS, 73 APPLICATIONS, IS THAT BECAUSE THERE ARE ACTUALLY 32 APPLICATIONS AND SOME APPLICATIONS WENT INTO MORE THAN ONE?
>> THEY NEEDED TO APPLY FOR INDIVIDUAL SCHOLARSHIPS.
BECAUSE THERE ARE SOME DIFFERENT CRITERIA. FOR EXAMPLE, THE CAB SCHOLARSHIPS ARE FOR ANY PARKLAND STUDENT.
THE OTHER ONES ARE ALL PARKLAND RESIDENTS WHO GO TO MST. THAT MAY BE A LITTLE DIFFERENT AS WELL. THERE'S ALSO A LITTLE BIT OF A DIFFERENCE IN SOME OF THE SCHOLARSHIPS AS TO WHAT MAJOR THAT THOSE STUDENTS ARE GOING INTO. STUDENTS, THEY DID PICKING AND CHOOSING AS TO WHAT THEY WERE APPLYING FOR.
>> THEY WERE ALLOWED TO SUBMIT TO MORE THAN ONE.
>> WHATEVER THEY WERE QUALIFIED FOR.
>> OKAY, AND TO CLARIFY YOU SAID THE SCORING FOR CRITERIA IS BASICALLY ROUGHLY THE SAME. SO WE'LL RANK THE WHOLE POOL
TOGETHER? >> YOU'LL JUST BERATE RANKING THE APPLICANT'S. IT'LL BE 32, EVEN THOUGH THEY WENT.
>> EXACTLY, WE'RE JUST TAKING THEM AS ONE POOL.
>> FOR INSTANCE, IF AN APPLICANT APPLIED FOR FIVE, THEY WERE ELIGIBLE FOR FIVE OF THE SCHOLARSHIPS AND THEY APPLIED FOR FIVE OF THEM, MARCELLA IS GOING TO GIVE YOU ONE OF THEIR APPLICATIONS TO REVIEW, BECAUSE IT'S STILL THE
SAME STUDENT. >> WE'LL CONSIDER THOSE 32, WE SCORE EACH OF THEM, AND ON THE BACK END YOU'LL GO BACK AND TAKE OUR SCORES, AND RANK THEM FOR EACH OF THE POOLS, AND IN THE REVIEW COMMITTEE, THE INTERVIEW COMMITTEE.
>> VALE AT THEIR SCORES. >> SO, AND I'M GLAD THAT YOU BROUGHT THAT UP, BECAUSE TO MAKE IT CLEAR THAT MEANS THAT IT WILL ONLY BE THE TOP 20 SCORING STUDENTS FROM THE REVIEW PROCESS THAT WILL MOVE ON TO THE INTERVIEW PROCESS.
BUT THEN IN ORDER TO COME OUT WITH A FINAL SCORE WILL STILL BE COMBINING THE REVIEW AND THE INTERVIEW TOGETHER FOR THAT
TOTAL SCORE. >> IF SOMEBODY HAS FIVE APPLICATIONS IN, FIVE DIFFERENT SCHOLARSHIPS, THEY COULD BE RANKED NUMBER ONE IN ONE BUT RANKED NUMBER THREE IN ANOTHER.
BASED ON >> THAT MAY ONLY HAPPEN IN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE CAB SCHOLARSHIPS AND THE NON-CAB SCHOLARSHIPS. BECAUSE THAT WOULD MEAN, YOU'VE GOT A POOL OF PEOPLE WHO COULD'VE APPLIED FOR ALL OF THEM, AS LONG AS THEY WERE A PARKLAND RESIDENT, WHO GOES TO MST, AND IS GOING INTO A MAJOR THAT FALLS UNDER ALL OF THOSE OTHER CATEGORIES.
[00:25:01]
WHICH IS POSSIBLE. >> WHAT I'M TRYING TO SAY IS, HOW MANY DIFFERENT SCHOLARSHIPS HAVE WE GIVEN?
>> 10. >> THERE WERE 10 SCHOLARSHIPS BUT FOR HOW MANY, HOW MANY DIFFERENT
>> THERE'S THREE FOR THE CAB. AND THEN THE OTHER SEVEN WOULD BE FOR THE OTHER ONES, AND I BELIEVE IT'S ONLY THE MESA TAYLOR FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP THAT INCLUDED A MENTAL HEALTH COMPONENT TO THE MAJOR THAT THE STUDENT WOULD BE GOING INTO.
>> OKAY. SO HERE'S MY QUESTION. IF ONE OF THEM, SAY FOR INSTANCE ONE KID FITS THAT CRITERIA FOR THE MESA TAYLOR SCHOLARSHIP. BUT YET, THAT PERSON RANKS THE LOWEST FROM THE 32, HOW DOES THAT, DO THEY GET KICKED OUT OF IT? BECAUSE THEY WERE THE ONLY ONES THAT WERE ELIGIBLE FOR THAT?
>> WE'LL TAKE THE TOP HIGHEST 20 SCORES, AND WE WILL SEE WHO FITS THE C.A.B. SCHOLARSHIP FIRST. THOSE ARE THE ONES THAT GO IN A RANK ORDER OF A DOLLAR AMOUNT. YOU'VE GOT A 2000, 1200, AND 800. WE'LL PROBABLY TAKE THOSE FIRST, AND THEN ALL THE OTHERS THAT ARE ELIGIBLE FOR THE OTHER ONES, WE'LL TAKE THEM IN RANK ORDER FROM THERE SCORING.
>> OKAY. >> IN OTHER WORDS, ON THE INTERVIEW DAY, THERE'S AT LEAST A NUMBER OF STUDENTS, YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE AT LEAST THREE WHO WOULD QUALIFY TO WIN, AND YOU WOULD HAVE AT LEAST THREE FOR THE KENNEDY SCHOLARSHIP, AND TWO MESA TAYLOR. IN OTHER WORDS, SO THAT THERE'S A MINIMUM. OF THE NUMBER.
>> AGAIN, IT'S REALLY JUST A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN C.A.B. AND ALL THE OTHERS. YEAH. BECAUSE I DON'T THINK THAT THE ONE QUALIFICATION OF THE MENTAL HEALTH COMPONENT TO A MAJOR MADE THAT MUCH OF A DIFFERENCE. AND IF FOR SOME WEIRD REASON THERE WAS ALL OF THE TOP 20 SCORING WENT ONE WAY OR THE OTHER, WOULD WE NEED TO COME TO AND ASK FOR SOME KIND OF ADJUSTMENT, OR SOME KIND OF POLICY THAT YOU PUT IN PLACE? I HAVE A FEELING WITH THAT MANY APPLICANTS, WE'RE PROBABLY GOING TO HAVE PLENTY THAT ARE QUALIFIED FOR BOTH. THAT'S A GOOD POINT, IF THERE'S SOME SNAFU LIKE THAT, WE'D BRING IT TO YOUR ATTENTION, BECAUSE WE'RE NOT GOING TO MAKE THAT
DECISION. >> GREAT, ALL RIGHT.
>> SO, 20 ARE GOING TO INTERVIEW, AND 10 WINNERSOUT OF THOSE 20? AND THEY HAVE TO BE DIFFERENT STUDENTS?
>> YES, IT WOULD ONLY BE FAIR TO MAKE SURE THAT THERE'S NOT A STUDENT WHO RECEIVES TWO SCHOLARSHIPS. BECAUSE WE'RE TRYING TO GIVE TO AS MANY STUDENTS AS POSSIBLE.
>> THE QUESTION IS, THE ONES NOT MAKING IT TO THE INTERVIEW, I WISH THAT WE HAD SOME KIND OF PROPER ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF THEIR EFFORT TO APPLY AND NOT MAKE IT INTO AN INTERVIEW. WHEN I WAS A STUDENT, I WAS THAT GROUP, APPLYING BUT NOT GETTING ANYTHING. I WONDER IF THEY ARE PROPERLY ACKNOWLEDGED OF THEIR EFFORTS TO APPLY, A PHONE CALL FROM ANYBODY HERE,
>> THAT'S SOMETHING YOU ALL CAN DECIDE TO DO.
>> HOW DOES IT WORK IN THE PAST, I THOUGHT YOU GUYS SENT
AN EMAIL OUT. >> THE CITY SENT OUT A LETTER THANKING THEM FOR APPLYING. BUT, IF YOU'RE RECOMMENDING A PHONE CALL OR SOMETHING, THAT'S SOMETHING THAT YOU ALL CAN DECIDE THAT YOU'D LIKE TO DO IN ADDITION TO THAT.
>> I WOULD RECOMMEND THAT. IF THEY APPLY, THEY APPLY, AND THE CITY ACKNOWLEDGES THEIR APPLICATION, BUT, WHEN THEY DON'T MAKE TO THE NEXT ROUND, IS THERE ANOTHER? WHAT HAPPENS? THEY WEREN'T SELECTED BUT WE APPRECIATE THEIR PARTICIPATING IN THE PROCESS. AND WE THANK THEM FOR IT.
>> IS IT 63 PHONE CALLS? >> I'M A FAN OF THE 20, IS
THAT WHAT YOU'RE SAYING? >> IT WOULD BE 12.
>> IT MIGHT BE DIFFICULT TO CALL SOMEBODY AND SAY, I'M SORRY, YOU DIDN'T MAKE IT, BUT THANKS FOR APPLYING. I THINK THAT WILL HURT MORE THAN THE EMAIL.
>> THE PROBLEM WITH THAT IS THEY'RE GOING TO ASK WHY. WHY WASN'T I ACCEPTED? IF YOU WANT TO GIVE THEM THAT OPPORTUNITY
TO BE VULNERABLE TO YOURSELF. >> I DON'T WANT TO PUT YOU IN
THAT POSITION. >> AND I DON'T KNOW, THESE KIDS ARE MINORS, ALSO. HOW ARE YOU GOING TO REACH OUT TO A MINOR WITHOUT THE PARENTS CONSENT? I DON'T KNOW IF THE PHONE CALL IS REALLY A GOOD IDEA. MAY BE JUST A VERY NICE
[00:30:02]
LETTER, SAYING, YOU'VE DONE A GREAT JOB, THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR COMMITMENT. NORMALLY WHAT HAPPENS IS, WE USUALLY MAKE IT WHERE WE WILL CONTACT YOU IF YOU MOVE ON TO THE NEXT LEVEL.AND NORMALLY, WHEN THEY DON'T GET THAT PHONE CALL, THEY
UNDERSTAND, >> BUT WE DO FOLLOW UP WITH THE
ENCOURAGING LETTER. >> WHAT YOU DO, I'VE SEEN THAT, IT'S A NICE LETTER. I DON'T KNOW. I'M WONDERING, IF THE PARENTS REALLY WOULD EVEN WANT THEIR CHILD TO GET A PHONE CALL. I KNOW ME, THE FIRST QUESTION I'M GOING TO ASK YOU IS WHY? WHY DIDN'T YOU PICK ME? WHAT'S GOING TO BE
YOUR RESPONSE? >> THEY GET A LETTER. THEY'RE
NOT LEFT HANGING. >> THEY GET A VERY NICE LETTER THAT BASICALLY SAYS THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR EFFORTS, PLEASE TRY AGAIN NEXT YEAR. IT BASICALLY SAYS, IT BASICALLY JUST SAYS DON'T GIVE UP, KEEP GOING. WE HAD A HUGE SELECTION OF STUDENTSTHIS YEAR, OVERWHELMING AMOUNT OF STUDENTS, LET THEM KNOW THAT LOOK, THIS WASN'T JUST 10 PEOPLE AND WE ONLY PICKED NINE OUT OF 10 AND YOU ARE THE LESS ONE HANGING. THERE WAS A LOT OF APPLICATIONS THAT CAME IN THIS YEAR, AND MAYBE WE CAN CHANGE IT UP TO MAKE IT A LITTLE MORE WORDY TO LET THAT BE EXPRESSED. I UNDERSTAND WHAT MARIANO IS SAYING, I WOULDN'T WANT TO BE THAT KID THAT LEFT OUT, BUT YET, THAT'S COMPETITION. THAT'S WHAT COMPETITION IS ALL ABOUT, THAT'S WHAT THEY'RE LEARNING AT THIS STAGE OF LIFE.
YOU'RE NOT ALWAYS GOING TO GET THAT QUARTERBACK POSITION. BUT I'VE SEEN YOUR LETTER, AND MAYBE BEFORE WE SEND THE LETTER OUT, WE'RE STILL GOING TO HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR
ANOTHER MEETING. >> YES, YOU WILL NEED TO APPROVE IT. WHAT HAPPENS IS WHEN WE TAKE ALL THE SCORES AND WE PUT THEM TOGETHER, IT'S THE NEXT MEETING THAT WE SAY THESE ARE THE STUDENTS WHO WERE THE TOP SCORING, AND THEN AS A BOARD YOU APPROVE THAT. THAT WOULD BE MAY 14TH. WE DON'T SEND A LETTER TO THEM UNTIL WE KNOW THAT YOU'VE APPROVED THAT
SLATE OF CANDIDATES. >> SO CAN YOU SEND US A COPY OF THE FORM LETTER THAT YOU NORMALLY SEND OUT? SO EVERYBODY CAN TAKE A LOOK AT IT YOU MARK AND IF WE HAVE CHANGES OR EDITS THAT WE MIGHT WANT TO PUT IN THAT LETTER THEN WE CAN GO AHEAD AND EACH COME UP WITH OUR IDEAS, MAYBE IT'S A PERFECT LETTER AND WE ALL SAY, NO, THIS IS FANTASTIC. MAY BE MARIANO OR SHARRY OR JEFF OR ANY OF US SAY, LISTEN, I'D LIKE TO ADD THIS TO IT, TO MAKE IT A LITTLE MORE APPEALING TO THE CHILD, LET THEM KNOW THAT HE DID A GREAT JOB. I'VE SEEN YOUR LETTER, USUALLY IT'S PRETTY GOOD. AT LEAST EVERYBODY WILL
HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO READ IT. >> THANK YOU. THERE'S ONE OTHER RECOMMENDATION THAT I'D LIKE TO MAKE WHEN IT COMES TO THE SCORING. ESPECIALLY SINCE WE HAVE SO MANY STUDENTS THAT WE'RE GOING TO NEED TO BE SCORING, YOU MIGHT WANT TO SCRUTINIZE THEM A LITTLE BIT MORE CAREFULLY. I KNOW IT'S DIFFICULT, BUT IF WE GIVE EVERYBODY ALL FIVES, THEN EVERYBODY IS GOING TO BE TIED FOR THE TOP PLACE, AND THAT'S NOT GOING, THAT'S NOT GOING TO WORK. SO JUST BE A LITTLE DISCERNING, WHEN YOU'RE SCORING, SO THAT WE'VE GOT SOME KIND OF SEPARATION BETWEEN THE CANDIDATES.
>> WHAT I DID, I JUDGED FOR THE STATE COMPETITION, AND WHEN I WAS, I KNEW I HAD TO SEE SEVERAL TEAMS THAT DAY, WHAT I DID, INSTEAD OF GIVING THE ONE KID, EVEN THOUGH HE DESERVED IT A 98, I GAVE HIM A 90. BECAUSE I WANTED TO LEAVE THOSE 10 SPOTS AHEAD OF HIM IN CASE I NEED TO GIVE SOMEBODY A 91 OR 95. EVERY TIME YOU SEE SOMEBODY YOU SAY, THIS IS THE BEST. THEN YOU FIND OUT LATER ON, THAT WASN'T THE BEST, THERE'S SOMEBODY THAT MIGHT BE BETTER THAN THEM. I LEFT A LOT OF RANGE IN BETWEEN, AND MY NEXT KID, THAT WAS A LITTLE BELOW HIM, MAYBE I GAVE HIM AN 80. NOW I HAVE BETWEEN 80 AND 90, 90 TO 100 THAT I WAS ABLE TO RAISE THEM. THAT'S HOW WE'VE DONE IT IN THE PAST, BUT EVERYBODY HAS THEIR OWN FORMULA
THAT THEY CAN USE. >> OKAY. I THINK I'VE GOT, IF YOU ALL ARE IN AGREEMENT I THINK WE'VE GOT OUR PROCESS.
>> IS EVERYBODY IN THE GREENS? SHOULD WE TAKE A VOTE ON IT? ALL RIGHT. ALL YEA IF YOU ALL AGREE. THE YAYS HABIT. GREAT
JOB, JACKIE. >> JACKIE, WHAT IS OUR DEADLINE FOR THOSE WHO ARE REVIEWERS, IF YOU DON'T MIND?
>> I THINK WE SAID APRIL 3RD WILL BE THREE WEEKS FROM TOMORROW, AND WE'LL GET YOU THOSE APPLICATIONS TOMORROW.
AND THE RUBRIC FOR YOU TO SCORE.
>> ALL RIGHT. >> AND AT THE NEXT MEETING WE'LL DECIDE THE TWO INTERVIEW DATES.
>> NO, WE'LL DO THAT SEPARATELY BECAUSE THE NEXT MEETING ISN'T UNTIL MAY 14TH, THAT'S WHEN YOU WILL BE SEEING WHO THE WINNERS ARE. WHAT WE'LL DO IS FOR THE FIVE OF YOU WHO ARE ON THE INTERVIEW GROUP, WE'LL SIT DOWN AND LOOK AT
[00:35:02]
SOME POSSIBLE DATES, AND WE'LL TRY AND MATCH IT UP WITH EVERYBODY AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. AND THEN WE'LL NEED TO PUBLICLY NOTICE THAT, BECAUSE IT WILL BE TECHNICALLY AN INTERVIEW SUBCOMMITTEE MEETING.>> CAN WE DO THAT NOW WITH THE CALENDAR?
>> NOT SURE IF EVERYBODY'S GOT THEIR CALENDARS AND WE PROBABLY NEED TO BE ABLE TO CHECK THE CITY CALENDAR TO ENSURE THERE'S NOT A PUBLIC MEETING IN HERE OR ANYTHING IN THAT AFTERNOON. SOMETIMES WE'VE GOT MEETINGS AND OTHER TYPES OF THINGS LIKE BID OPENINGS FOR PURCHASING IN HIS ROOM. WE'LL
GO BACK AND CHECK. >> TO LET YOU KNOW, I JUST CHECKED THE END OF APRIL, BEGINNING MAY, I'M FINE, WHATEVER YOU DO, I'M GOOD FOR ANY OF THOSE DAYS.
>> THANK YOU. >> NEXT ON THE AGENDA SINCE JEFF TOLD ME NOT TO MAKE FUN OF HIM TONIGHT, WE'RE GOING TO CLOSE IT. ALL RIGHT.
