>> AS THE MAYOR SAID, NOW MORE THAN EVER, IT REALLY IS IMPORTANT FOR US TO SUPPORT OUR BUSINESS COMMUNITY HERE IN PARKLAND. AND LIKE TODD, I ALSO ENJOY THE MANY RESTAURANTS WE HAVE HERE IN THE CITY AND IS A RESIDENT, I REALLY STRIVE TO YOU NOW, VISIT OUR PARKLAND BUSINESSES IS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. BESIDES THE CITY BEING COMMITTED TO OUR BUSINESSES, WE ALSO HAVE A PARTNER HERE, THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, ALSO HERE COMMITTED TO SUPPORTING OUR BUSINESSES, WHICH IS WHY WE ARE HERE TODAY.

AND THE GENESIS OF THIS IS DURING STRATEGIC PLANNING AS YOU KNOW, WE HAVE HAD A DISCUSSION ABOUT FORMING AN ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ADVISORY BOARD.

AND WE ALL REALIZE THAT WE HAVE GOT A TREMENDOUS TALENT HERE WITH THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. THESE ARE ALL PARKING BUSINESSES, THEY KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON AND THEY ARE VERY SMART PEOPLE SO WHY NOT PARTNER WITH THEM AND GET THEIR INPUT? AND MAKE THIS PARTNERSHIP WORK. LET ME GIVE YOU A LITTLE BIT OF STATISTICS ABOUT PARKING BUSINESSES.

TAKING A LOOK AT OUR COMMERCIAL BUSINESS TAX RECEIPTS.

WE HAVE ABOUT 130 BRICK-AND-MORTAR BUSINESSES, 270 HOME BUSINESSES, SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE FISCAL YEAR WE'VE HAD 11 NEW BUSINESSES COMING AND WE ARE ANTICIPATING ABOUT 42 MORE WITH THE VIP SALONS COMING IN BECAUSE THERE WILL BE EACH INDEPENDENT BUSINESSES WITHIN THE SALON.

AND THE CITY STRIVES TO MAKE THIS A VERY BUSINESS FRIENDLY CITY. THERE ARE A LOT OF THINGS THAT WE DO IN ORDER TO SUPPORT THE BUSINESSES AND ONE OF THE GREAT PROGRAMS THAT WE HAVE IS THE NEW BUSINESS PROGRAM AND TODD DEANGELIS WILL TELL YOU A LITTLE ABOUT THAT.

SO WE FIRST SHIPPED THE NAME TO REFLECT WHAT IT WAS SO IT WAS MORE EASILY IDENTIFIABLE, NOW CALLED THE NEW BUSINESS PROGRAM AND WHAT THIS AMOUNTS TO IS PUTTING STRUCTURE TO IN EFFECT, A CONCIERGE SERVICE FOR BUSINESSES TO GET ON BOARD AND COMING INTO THE CITY.

IT GIVES THEM A SENSE OF BELONGING, SINCE THEY'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE FOR THEIR BUSINESS AND THAT THEY ARE SUPPORTED EVERY STEP OF THE WAY.

I HAVE A FEW SPECIFIC IDEAS FOR COLLABORATION WE CAN TALK ABOUT BUT THE FIRST, I WANT TO INTRODUCE DOUG AND MEMBERS OF THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE WHO ARE HERE AND IF YOU LIKE TO USE THE MICROPHONE THERE, JUST POPPED ON AND DOUG IF YOU WOULD, IF YOU LOOKED INTRODUCE A GROUP

I'VE HEARD WE'VE DONE A TASTE OF PARKLAND IN THE PAST, IT'S BEEN ONE OF THE COMMERCIAL CENTERS, AND THE PARKING LOT AND YOU KNOW, SOME KIND OF ACCOMMODATION OF A BUSINESS EXPO AND TASTE OF PARKLAND MIGHT BE A GREAT WAY TO FEATURE BUSINESSES AND DO IT OUT THERE WHERE THEY ARE.

I JUST WANTED TO THROW THAT IDEA OUT FIRST AND SEE IF WE

WANTED TO DISCUSS THAT A BIT. >> YES.

[LAUGHTER] >> I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT THAT WE OBVIOUSLY, COLLABORATE ON DIFFERENT PROJECTS WITH THE CHAMBER. BUT I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO HEAR A LITTLE BIT MORE LIKE WHAT, WHAT MORE CAN WE DO AS FAR AS THE CITY IS CONCERNED? SO, I KNOW THAT WE WORK TOGETHER WITH RIBBON CUTTINGS, YOU KNOW, WHERE WE ALL TRY TO GO AND WE SUPPORT YOU AND YOUR BUSINESS OBVIOUSLY.

BUT YOU KNOW I THINK DOING A BUSINESS EXPO, WE DO THAT THE FARMERS MARKET, A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO WE PROMOTED, WILL TAKE A LOT OF THE BLAME ON THIS CURRENT YEAR, WE DID NOT PROMOTE IT AS GOOD AS WE DID BEFORE.

YOU KNOW, AND THOSE PROJECTS SOUND GREAT BUT I WANT TO TRY AND GET A LITTLE BIT OF FEEDBACK.

DOING PROJECT IS GREAT BUT WHAT MORE CAN THE CITY, HOW CAN WE

HELP THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY? >> THANK YOU.

WE SEE THIS AS THE SYNERGY. THERE ARE TWO FLAVORS OF THIS.

THERE IS COLLABORATION ON THINGS THAT BENEFIT THE CITY.

AND THEN IN TURN WOULD BENEFIT THE CHAMBER.

LIKE BUSINESS EXPO AND THINGS LIKE THAT.

THERE'S A LOT OF ACTIVITY, THAT IS ONE FORM OF THIS AND SYNERGIES WITH RESPECT TO US COLLABORATING ON IDEAS.

LIKE BEING A PART OF PLANNING OR WHATEVER.

IF THERE'S A TREND MONDAY, A STRATEGIC PLAN, ANYTHING LIKE THAT WHERE YOU CAN TAP INTO THE 130 SOME ODD MEMBERS, WHO ARE SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS PEOPLE, TO WORK TOGETHER ON DIFFERENT WAYS TO GROW THE CITIES REVENUE STREAM, THE I GUESS, THE BUSINESS REVENUE AND RETAIN AND ATTRACT BUSINESS.

SO WE JUST HAVE TO CONTINUE, AT LEAST FOR ME, JUST FIGURE OUT OBVIOUSLY WE WON'T FIGURE IT OUT TODAY, BUT JUST HOW THE

CITY CAN REALLY YOU KNOW, HELP YOU KNOW, PROMOTE OUR BUSINESSES AND MAKE SURE PEOPLE UNDERSTAND AND TO THINK ONE OF THE THINGS BY HAVING A BUSINESS EXPO OR HAVING A TASTE OF PARKLAND, BUSINESSES UNDERSTANDING THAT WE ARE DOING A PARTNERSHIP, WHERE COLLABORATING TOGETHER, I THINK THAT WILL ORGANICALLY HELP THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY UNDERSTAND THAT THE CITY IS BEHIND YOU KNOW, THE BUSINESS.

SO I THINK THAT WILL IN ITSELF HELP, BUT I WOULD LIKE EVENTUALLY TO FIGURE OUT MAYBE WE HAVE YOU KNOW, MEETINGS LIKE

THIS YOU KNOW, -- >> RICH, YOU LOOKING FOR

SPECIFIC THINGS? >> AGAIN, I'M NOT NECESSARILY SURE TODAY WE WILL GET THROUGH THAT BUT THOSE ARE CONVERSATIONS THAT I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE.

YOU KNOW, JUST TO SEE HOW, WHAT MORE WE CAN DO.

AGAIN, I THINK HAVING A COUPLE OF PROJECTS WHAT YOU TALK ABOUT IS FANTASTIC AND GREAT START. AND AGAIN, IT WILL MAKE EVERYONE AWARE THAT WE ARE PRO- BUSINESS WE WANT TO MAKE SURE BUSINESS COMMUNITY SUCCEEDS AND WE WANT TO TRY AND HELP FACILITATE THAT BUT AT SOME POINT, WE WILL NEED TO EVENTUALLY TRY TO DIVE A LITTLE BIT DEEPER AND FIND OUT WHAT WE CAN DO MORE AS A CITY OTHER THAN NECESSARILY PROJECT? YOU TALK ABOUT -- I'M NOT SURE WHAT THAT WOULD LOOK LIKE AND AGAIN, I DO NOT WANT TO NECESSARILY TRY TO HAMMER THAT OUT TODAY BUT I DO WANT TO SEE HOW WE CAN POTENTIALLY TAP INTO THE RESOURCE OF THE CHAMBER LIKE MENTIONED A LITTLE BIT FURTHER SO THAT WE CAN HAVE MORE RESOURCES BECAUSE AGAIN, WHEN WE SERVE UP HERE IS A COMMISSION, AT LEAST HOW I VIEW IT, MY MAIN OBJECTIVE IS, I AM THE LIAISON BETWEEN THE COMMUNITY AND STAFF. SO I TRY TO BE OUT EVERYWHERE, NOT BECAUSE I WANT TO TAKE PICTURES OR WHATEVER, BUT I'M TRYING TO GET AS MUCH FEEDBACK AND INFORMATION FROM PEOPLE SO I CAN TAKE THAT INFORMATION BACK TO STAFF, SO THAT WE ARE MAKING SURE WE ARE DOING WITH THE RESIDENTS WANT TO HEAR.

AND IF WE HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO BRANCH OUT EVEN HAVING MORE PEOPLE, TOUCHING DIFFERENT ASPECTS THAT YOU KNOW, MAYBE I'M NOT ALWAYS TOUCHING WITH THE OTHER COMMISSIONERS ARE TOUCHING IT JUST GIVES US MORE INFORMATION OF WHAT THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY IS LOOKING FOR, WHAT SHOP OWNERS ARE LOOKING FOR, WHAT SHOPPING PLAZA OWNERS ARE LOOKING FOR.

YOU KNOW WHATEVER. THAT IS ONE OF THE THINGS THAT PERSONALLY, I WOULD LIKE TO SEE.

I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU GUYS THINK AS FAR AS --

>> I THINK FROM THE CITY SIDE, WE HAVE A PROCLAMATION, WILL BE NICE IF WE COULD SPOTLIGHT A COMPANY, EVERY COMMISSION MEETING GIVE THEM THREE MINUTES AND COME IN TO TALK ABOUT THEIR BUSINESS. IT'S THREE MONTHS OF OUR TIME ON THINK IT IS TOO MUCH TO GIVE.

AND EVENTUALLY WILL BE ABLE TO COMPLETE ALL OF THEM BUT I'VE DONE THIS BEFORE. CREATE SOME SORT OF DISCOUNT CARD RIGHT? EITHER AVAILABLE ONLY TO CHAMBER MEMBERS OR TO CHAMBER MEMBERS OR CITY RESIDENTS WHO PAY FOR IT. EACH BUSINESS AGREES TO GIVE SOME SORT OF DISCOUNT SOME SORT OF OFFER SOME SORT OF DEAL.

EVERYONE HAS A CARD WHEN YOU GO TO THOSE PLACES, YOU CAN UTILIZE THE DEAL AND WHAT IT DOES IS DRIVES PEOPLE TO A DRYCLEANER OR SALON OR OTHERWISE.

MOST PEOPLE KNOW GOING OUTSIDE THE CITY FOR IT.

BUT THEY HAVE AN INCENTIVE WHICH IS STILL ENOUGH TO BE JUSTIFIABLE FOR THE BUSINESS AND YOU KNOW IT DRIVES PEOPLE TO GO THERE. I THINK IT ALSO GENERATES

REVENUE. >> I HAD THE SIMILAR CONVERSATION WITH DOUG ABOUT THAT.

AND THAT'S WHERE WE WOULD HAVE TO FINE-TUNE WHAT WITH THE CHAMBER RESPONSIBILITY BE AND WE DON'T NECESSARILY WANT TO GET INTO TOO MUCH OF THE WEEDS. YOU KNOW WHEN IT IS SOMETHING THAT THE CHAMBER CAN DO, LET'S TAKE THE DISCOUNT CARD OR WHATEVER. THAT IS CERTAINLY SOMETHING THE CHAMBER CAN RUN WITH IT WE CAN POTENTIALLY HELP WHETHER IT IS US ON A PERSONAL LEVEL, OR WHATEVER.

YOU KNOW BUT THOSE ARE SOME OF THE THINGS THAT IS A GREAT IDEA. YOU KNOW THAT WE KIND OF NEED

TO HAVE AROUND. >> I JUST WANT TO TAKE A STEP BACK BECAUSE WHEN WE WERE IN STRATEGIC PLANNING THIS IS THE SECOND YEAR WE'VE TALKED ABOUT THIS.

IT STARTED WITH THE NOTION THAT WE ARE IN THE CITY THAT IS EVOLVING. CITY THAT IS GROWING.

NOW WE'VE GOT OVER PROBABLY 35,000 RESIDENTS AND I WOULD VENTURE TO SAY THAT WE HAVE PROBABLY ONE OF THE HIGHEST, IF NOT THE HIGHEST IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA, MAYBE BEYOND, AMOUNT OF C SUITE BUSINESS EXECUTIVES PER CAPITA IN OUR CITY THAN

ANYWHERE ELSE IN FLORIDA. WE HAVE A OPPORTUNITY TO SEIZE UPON THAT. I THINK WHAT THE CHAMBER IS DOING IS GREAT. BUT WHAT I LIKE TO SEE AND WE TALKED ABOUT THIS IN THE CONTEXT OF ADDITIONALLY, AN ECONOMIC ADVISORY BOARD WHERE WE ARE NOT JUST FOCUSING ON RIBBON-CUTTING AND THOSE THINGS WE ARE TALKING ABOUT GRANT OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES THAT OUR BUSINESSES HAVE.

AND AS WE SEE BUSINESSES COME AND GO AND TURN THE LIGHTS OFF, SOMETIMES IT IS A PRODUCT OF POOR MANAGEMENT, SOMETIMES AS THE ECONOMY BUT SOMETIMES IT IS THE COMMUNITY NOT EMBRACING THEM. I WOULD LIKE TO FOCUS ON THE BIGGER PICTURE HERE OF WHAT OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE CHAMBER LOOKS LIKE. AND EITHER IT IS GETTING THE CHAMBER TO PARTICIPATE THROUGH SOME SORT OF ADVISORY BOARD IF WE ARE NOT GOING TO DO THAT BECAUSE THAT WAS SORT OF HOW WE STARTED OFF THIS DISCUSSION WITH STRATEGIC PLANNING.

BUT RATHER GETTING TO A FORMAL PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND LET'S TALK ABOUT DOING THAT AND WHAT THAT PARTNERSHIP MAY LOOK LIKE. RATHER THAN A PROJECT BY PROJECT BASIS. LET'S TALK ABOUT A TRUE PARTNERSHIP IN PROVIDING SOME SORT OF RESOURCES AND SYNERGIES THAT WE CAN WORK ON WITH THE CHAMBER ON A LARGE SCALE.

AND THEN WE CAN FIGURE OUT PROJECT BY PROJECT BASIS, HOW WE ROLL IT OUT. BUT THOSE ARE THE THINGS, I WANT TO FOCUS ON MORE OF THE RELATIONSHIP FIRST.

>> I THINK THAT'S WHAT WE ARE STARTING TO DO TODAY, BY HAVING THIS WORKSHOP AND HAVING THIS DISCUSSION.

BUT I THINK TO JACKIE! CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG, WE ARE TRYING TO LEARN WHAT WE CAN DO AND HOW WE CAN BENEFIT AND BY STARTING SLOWER, I KNOW THAT I TALKED TO DOUG A LITTLE BIT STARTING WITH SOME PROJECTS AND DIFFERENT THINGS THAT THAT WE COULD START TO FIND AND DEVELOP EXACTLY WHAT OUR RELATIONSHIP CAN BE AND WHAT MORE WE CAN DO TO HELP YOU.

WE REALLY NEED TO THINK, SOMETIME TO UNDERSTAND YOUR GOALS, UNDERSTAND OUR GOALS IN THE WEEK AND TRY TO CALM IT'S LIKE WITH ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE.

WE DIDN'T REALLY KNOW WHAT, YOU'RE 100 PERCENT RIGHT BUT WE DIDN'T REALLY KNOW WHAT THEY COULD DO.

AND I THINK THAT HAVING THIS, WE CAN KIND OF IRON OUT OVER SOME TIME AND ACTUALLY FIGURE OUT WHAT WE ARE LOOKING TO DO AS A PARTNERSHIP. BECAUSE YOU KNOW, PARTNERSHIP TO YOUR POINT IS EXACTLY WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR.

>> THE QUESTION POSED IS, WHAT IS IT THAT YOU OR WE CAN DO FOR EACH OTHER? AND I'M NOT SURE WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR. IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR VISIBILITY FOR THE BUSINESSES IN THE AREA AND THE CITY HAS A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT PROJECTS THAT ARE COMING FORWARD LIKE FRANCIS, PARKLAND WILL HAVE PARKLAND DAYS PARADE AND THUS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE CHAMBER AND BUSINESSES WITHIN THE COMMUNITY TO PUT TOGETHER A FLOAT AND TO PRESENT THE FLOW THROUGHOUT THE RESIDENCE THAT WILL BE COMING OUT IN THE CITY AREA SO THAT THEY CAN GET TO KNOW THE BUSINESS, A FREE OPPORTUNITY BASICALLY, TO ADVERTISE.

THE EXPO THING, I WANT TO QUESTION HOW WILL BE APPROACHING THAT BECAUSE WE HAVE BUSINESSES THAT ARE BOTH BRICK-AND-MORTAR, RESTAURANTS AND FACILITIES AND WE HAVE ALL THE OTHER BUSINESSES THAT WE TALKED ABOUT.

I COULD NAME A DOZEN ORGANIZATIONS THAT COULD GO TO DO BUSINESS NETWORKING. THE REASON I INVEST TIME AND ENERGY INTO THE PARKLAND CHAMBER OF COMMERCE SPECIFICALLY, IS THAT IN ADDITION TO PROMOTING MY BUSINESS, I GET TO BE INVOLVED IN A WAY TO IMPROVE LIFE FOR THE COMMUNITY OF PARKLAND. AND I THINK THAT'S A BIG PART OF OUR MISSION, AS WAS MENTIONED EARLIER, BEING THE VOICE FOR BUSINESS IN PARKLAND IS WHAT WE ARE TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH. I THINK IF THE IDEA OF HAVING AN ADDITIONAL COMMISSION OR ADVISORY BOARD HAS SOME CONCERNS TO IT, OR TO EVEN MORE FORMALIZE AND SOME THINGS THAT WE ALREADY DO FOR EXAMPLE, AT TIMES, WE'VE HAD SOME INVOLVEMENT IN DIFFERENT PHASES OF STRATEGIC PLANNING.

I THINK WE LEFT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE ALWAYS HAVE A PART TO PLAY IN THINGS LIKE THAT. THERE ARE A LOT OF REALLY IMPORTANT ISSUES IN FRONT OF YOU WERE COMING DOWN THE PIKE IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF YEARS. THAT ARE GOING TO SHAPE THE FUTURE OF TRAUMA SPECIFICALLY. I THINK WE WOULD LOVE TO BE ABLE TO BRING REPRESENTATION TO THAT.

AND I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THAT SOME OF THESE IDEAS THAT WE ARE DISCUSSING SPECIFICALLY, THERE COULD BE SOME QUICK WINS, WOULD BE A BYPRODUCT OF SOME OF THE CONVERSATION.
